Tear Trough Filler

The tear trough is the area under your eye that commonly looks like a dark circle. Dark circles can result from many things, including poor hydration, allergies and pigmentation. However, one of the most common causes for dark circles under the eyes is a lack of volume in the tear trough area. Many people have deep tear troughs from a young age, with there likely being a genetic element to this. However, the tear troughs also worsen as we age, with gradual erosion of the bone and soft tissues in the area creating a sunken appearance. Filler placed carefully in the area can significantly rejuvenate the under eye and provide a refreshed look.

Who can get tear trough filler?

You can get tear trough filler if you are:

  • Over the age of 18

  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding

We would also like to be aware if you are taking any anticoagulant, or antiplatelet, medication, although this does not prevent you from having treatment. You will also have to make us aware if you have an allergy to local anaesthetic, as the majority of filler contains lidocaine and we will have to choose a product that does not contain this if you do in fact have an allergy.

What should I expect if I come for a filler treatment?

When you arrive at Fillers & Frowns you will be greeted, invited to take a seat and you will be asked to complete a detailed medical questionnaire if you have not completed this electronically prior to your arrival. You will then be called in at your appointment time, at which point you will have an in-depth consultation and examination process, by which we will get to understand what you are hoping to achieve through the tear trough filler procedure. Facial mapping will be performed during the examination, which will look to identify any other areas of the face that may benefit from filler, with a common one being the cheeks.

Numbing cream will be applied to make the procedure more comfortable. We will often also use ice, as this helps to prevent swelling and inflammation, as well as reduces the discomfort associated with the procedure. Once the numbing cream has had time to work (15-20 minutes), the injections will be carefully placed to volumise the tear trough, followed by a thorough massage to ensure that the filler has been placed evenly and it is smooth before you leave.

The overall appointment will take around 45 minutes, with plenty of time being allocated for questions you may have regarding the treatment. After care advice will be provided and you will also receive an email with after care advice following your visit to the clinic.

Complications and side effects

The most common side effect of tear trough filler treatment is mild bruising and swelling. Arnica cream will be provided following the treatment, as part of your post-treatment pack, in order to increase the speed at which any bruising resolves (typically 5-7 days, up to 2 weeks for deeper haematomoas). The swelling occurs because the filler itself is made from hyaluronic acid and this attracts water, so a degree of swelling is unavoidable for around 1 week after treatment.

As with all procedures there is a small chance of infection, which is reduced even further due to our extensive preparation of skin using chlorhexidine. If infections do develop, despite best efforts to cleanse the skin prior to treatment, Fillers & Frowns is doctor-led and so a prescription for antibiotics will be issued quickly.

As with any filler procedure there is a small risk of a vascular occlusion, whereby an underlying blood vessel is blocked. In this rare event we are prepared with a product called Hyalase, which is used to dissolve the filler and restore the blood supply to the skin. It is for these reasons that our recommendations are to ensure that you are treated by experienced healthcare professionals within the industry when getting aesthetic treatments performed. All of our treatments are performed by a GMC-registered doctor who has extensive training and experience in delivering these treatments in the safest possible manner.

How long does it last?

Tear trough filler will usually last for around 9-12 months.

Does it hurt?

Having your tear trough treated with dermal filler should not be particularly painful. However, here at Fillers & Frowns we specialise in pain reduction during aesthetic treatments in order to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

What does it combine well with?

Cheek filler can often combine well with tear trough filler, as it helps to provide a degree of lift.

No. The tear trough area is a particularly sensitive area of the face, particularly when it comes to post-treatment swelling. Due to this, it is best to treat particularly deep tear troughs in a step-wise manner. However, the majority of tear troughs will be sufficiently filled with 1ml of filler.

Your tear trough filler will be massaged prior to you leaving the clinic to ensure that any lumps and bumps from the treatment are gone. The filler remains quite soft for the initial 48-72 hours and can be moved slightly if firm pressure is applied, therefore we do not recommend massaging the area yourself afterwards. Any lumps that appear following the treatment will likely be due to swelling and these will usually go within 5-7 days once the swelling has reduced.
